Reflecting on a Year of Growth and Self-Discovery

As we wrap up and move into another year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journeys we’ve witnessed from the fighters I’ve had the privilege of interviewing on the podcast. This year has been filled with stories of growth, challenges, and perseverance—stories that remind us all why we train, fight, and strive for something greater than ourselves.

Muay Thai is so much more than physical accomplishments in the ring. It’s about personal transformation. This year, our conversations have shown us that Muay Thai is a constant quest—not just for mastery of the sport, but for self-discovery and self-improvement.

Looking ahead to the next year, I want to revisit the stories of four remarkable fighters—Eddie Abasolo, Asa Ten Pow, Johan Ghazali, and Janet Todd. Each of their journeys embodies the spirit of the quest: evolving, adapting, and becoming the best version of themselves. These stories are a reminder of what it truly means to commit to your craft, your growth, and your potential.

Eddie Abasolo: The Quest for Continuous Evolution

First up, Eddie Abasolo. Eddie’s journey this year has been one of constant evolution. When he first found Muay Thai, he didn’t expect it to become his passion, but once it did, his quest became clear: to push the limits of who he was, both inside and outside the ring.

Throughout our discussions, Eddie emphasized how important it is to discover new versions of yourself through competition—versions that emerge when you’re pushed by high-level opponents. His training is playful and challenging—incorporating cartwheels and yoga ball exercises to improve body awareness and break his own limits. Even when injured, Eddie didn’t slow down but used the downtime to refine his skills. His approach has always been about continuous improvement and never letting himself become “dull.”

Eddie’s story is a powerful reminder that the quest for self-improvement never ends. No matter where we are in our journey, there’s always room to grow, adapt, and evolve.

Asa Ten Pow: The Quest to Perfect His Craft

Next, we have Asa Ten Pow, whose journey has been about blending the best elements of various martial arts. From the beginning, Asa’s quest was to find his own unique style—one that blends traditional martial arts with modern techniques like boxing and kickboxing.

This year, we saw Asa continually test himself, evolving as a fighter by incorporating new tools and techniques. What really stands out about Asa’s journey is his commitment to learning. He’s always adapting, always looking for ways to improve. He approaches each fight as an opportunity to evolve, never static, always seeking that next level of self-expression. Asa is shaping the future of martial arts, and his legacy is one of growth and evolution.

As we head into the next year, Asa’s story is a reminder that growth never stops. The best fighters are always learning, always evolving, always pushing themselves further.

Johan Ghazali: The Quest for Experience and Mastery

Then, we have Johan Ghazali, whose journey has been deeply rooted in gaining experience and mastery. Growing up in a family of fighters, Johan’s quest has always been to follow in those footsteps—but it hasn’t been easy.

This year, Johan shared how his early losses in Thailand shaped his approach to Muay Thai. Those setbacks taught him the value of hard work, perseverance, and trusting his instincts. His focus is now on gaining experience, learning from every fight, and continuing to develop. This year, he made it clear that his ultimate goal is to become a world champion, but he understands that true mastery takes time. Patience, perseverance, and trust in the process are key to his journey.

Johan’s story is a perfect example of how setbacks can become the foundation for future success. As we head into the next year, his story reminds us that the path to greatness isn’t linear—it’s full of challenges, but each one is an opportunity to grow, learn, and improve.

Janet Todd: The Quest for the Perfect Farewell

Finally, we had Janet Todd, whose quest this year was about achieving the perfect farewell to the sport she loves. Janet’s journey into Muay Thai wasn’t a traditional one—she came from gymnastics and cheerleading before eventually finding her way into Muay Thai.
But once she was in, Janet embraced it with an analytical mindset, breaking down her training step by step.

This year, we saw her shift her mindset, learning to enjoy the process, bring play into her training, and embrace the value of making mistakes. Her journey isn’t just about becoming a better fighter—it’s about finding joy in the pursuit, mastering herself in the ring and beyond.

As we head into the new year, Janet’s story is a powerful reminder that the true value of this journey is in the process, not just the outcome. When we combine passion with a growth mindset, the possibilities are limitless.

Looking Ahead: The Ongoing Quest for Self-Discovery

As we look back on this year, I’m reminded of just how much these fighters have taught us about the quest for self-discovery. Eddie, Asa, Johan, and Janet have each followed their own path, but they all share the same commitment to improvement, to pushing their limits, and to becoming the best versions of themselves.

This year has shown us that the true rewards in Muay Thai aren’t just in the wins or titles—they’re in the growth, the lessons, and the transformation that comes through the journey.

As we head into the new year, I encourage you to reflect on your own journey. What have you learned this year? How have you grown? And where will your quest take you in the year to come?

Thanks for reading, and here’s to another year of growth, mastery, and the relentless pursuit of becoming the best version of ourselves. Keep pushing, keep evolving, and I’ll see you in the new year!
